You don't have to install driver in the client machine, just putting the jdbc driver in archive tag should work.Make sure you put the jar files in the correct directory, which you have referred in the html.Also when you do testing , don't test it by accessing locally, try to access through webserver.
You cannot run the database server in a server other than webserver. If you really want to do that, then you have to sign the applet. Have a look at the following url for signing applethttp://www.suitable.com/Doc_CodeSigning.shtml

How to download a jdbc driver in applet from web server if the client has not install the jdbc driver? and can I use the jdbc driver in applet to connect a database server whose machine is not the machine runs the web server? thanks a lot!
