Once a cell is selected, how do you "unselect" it, from a visual point of view. The box always stay there.

If a user want to select the whole table, or a set of rows for copying into the clipboard, is it possible the user be given visual feedback that the rows or columns have been selected.

when a cell is selected, it will get focus background, focus foreground colors and cell highlight border.
When you press "escape" key, the cell should be unselected and all the focus colors and borders will be removed.

You can alter the above colors and borders using ths Skin class properties listed below. Refer api doc of Skin class.
Skin.FOCUS_CELL_BACKGROUND
Skin.FOCUS_CELL_FOREGROUND
Skin.FOCUS_CELL_HIGHLIGHT_BORDER

I agree that, If the whole table or set of rows are selected Jtable doesn't provide a way of setting a border around them. QuickTable doesn't support this feature. We will try to add this feature in future. Currently just selection foreground and background colors are the only indication for these rows. You can change them using following properties

Skin.SELECTION_BACKGROUND
Skin.SELECTION_FOREGROUND
